Infection control at work

Being physically present at work is now to some extent possible. The employer should make assessments of the necessity for working from home based on the local level of infection. Partially working from home and / or flexible working hours should also be arranged.

Measures for infection control are still important. The three key measures are:

  • Stay at home if you are sick
  • Keep a distance to others
  • Maintain good hand hygiene

Stay at home if you are sick

If you develop symptoms of a coronavirus infection you should stay at home and contact the local health services in order to get tested. If the test result comes back negative, you will be able to return to work provided your general condition is good (you feel well with no fever). This applies even if some symptoms of a respiratory infection still linger. Refer to the flow chart at NIPH for when to return to work.

Keep a distance to others

A distance between employees of at least one meter should be facilitated at all times at the workplace.

Partially working from home and / or flexible working hours should be arranged.

Maintain good hand hygiene and routines for cleaning

Employees should be offered adequate opportunities to maintain good hand hygiene. An alcohol-based disinfectant will also be effective and can serve as an alternative if hand washing with soap is unavailable.

Handles, sinks, toilets, and other frequently touched objects should be cleaned frequently.

Working from home

The employer should make it feasible to work partly from home and / or flexible working hours. The employer should make assessments of the necessity for working from home based on the local level of infection.

Tips on how to maintain your physical and mental health while working from home:

For some, working rom home can be stressful due to psychosocial/social factors, the home situation or similar.

  • Maintain a daily rhythm that resembles a normal day at work
  • Treat yourself to a daily dose of daylight, fresh air and some light exercise either before or after work - or during your lunch break if it is feasible.
  • Arrange for regular appointments and social "coffee breaks" each day – digital channels allow for both business meetings and less formal social gatherings.

Travels in connection with work

At present, the opportunity for foreigners to enter Norway is limited. Employers can apply for foreign employees to enter Norway when the employee will perform work that is strictly necessary to maintain activities in a Norwegian company. The employer must submit an application at sjø (in Norwegian).

If you arrive from a country or area that triggers travel quarantine you may be exempt from completing your travel quarantine at a quarantine hotel if you can document that your employer provides a suitable accommodation as approved by the Norwegian Labour Inspection Authority. You can document this e.g. via a copy of the approval. Further information om the approval process can be found at (in Norwegian).

When travelling to Norway you must keep in mind:

There might be exceptions, and it is your duty to familiarize yourself with the rules. If you do not comply with the rules, you might be denied entry. Violation of the quarantine duty is a criminal offence.
