The rates at which you are reimbursed for your patient travel expenses and the user fee you have to pay are determined annually by the Storting.
The following rates apply to patient travel from 1st of January 2021:

Standard rate for travel companion(only when travelling by public transport. Must be documented) | NOK 2,70 per kilometre |
Subsistence allowance | NOK 238 per day |
Accommodation allowance (must be documented) | Up to NOK 614 per day |
Lost earnings for travel companion (must be documented) | NOK 143 per hour for a maximum of eight hours per day |
Travel companion's expenses for hired assistance, as cover for their own work (must be documented. Hired assistance from a close relative of the patient or travel companion is not covered) | Up to NOK 48 per hour for a maximum eight hours per day |
Lost earnings as a result of occupational injury | NOK 74 per hour (up to a maximum of NOK 386 per day) |
Amounts of less than NOK 100 will not normally be reimbursed. If you make several patient journeys within a period of six months and your total expenses for all journeys amount to at least NOK 100, you may still be entitled to reimbursement for these amounts collectively.

Lost earnings as a result of occupational injury | NOK 76 per hour (up to a maximum of NOK 396 per day) |
Amounts of less than NOK 100 will not normally be reimbursed. If you make several patient journeys within a period of six months and your total expenses for all journeys amount to at least NOK 100, you may still be entitled to reimbursement for these amounts collectively.
You will have to pay a user fee for your travel if you do not have an exemption card. You must pay a user fee for both the outward and return leg of your journey. In the case of a return journey, you will have to pay two user fees.

You will be exempt from paying user fees if you:
If you pay more than the stipulated user fee ceiling during a particular year, you will be entitled to an exemption card.
User fees for travel in connection with free treatment options do not count towards the basis for an exemption card.
