What’s happening to the mother in week 13 and 14?

At weeks 13 and 14, the uterus is the size of a grapefruit. It is common for you to gain weight during this period. Weight gain is usually one to four kilograms. Gestational nausea has usually subsided and many people find that they are less tired and have more energy.

Development of the fetus

By now, the foetus is about 8 cm, but this can vary from pregnancy to pregnancy.

Fine, thin hairs start to grow on the foetus’ body. These hairs help to protect the foetus’ skin.

The foetus may hiccup and move around, but you will probably not be able to feel it yet. This is partly because the amniotic fluid acts as a shock absorber and partly because there is no somatosensory system on the inside of the uterus. Around this time, the foetus starts to swallow small amounts of amniotic fluid.
