What is a 3 months check-up?

When your child is 3 months old, you will be offered an individual consultation at the health centre.

Who you will meet

• public health nurse

Topics at the 3 months check-up

The public health nurse will discuss topics such as:

• the interaction between you and the child
• the child's development (in Norwegian)
• the child's well-being, crying and daily routines
• breastfeeding, vitamins and breast milk substitutes
• the child’s physical activity (in Norwegian) and movement development
• the child's sleep (in Norwegian)
• safety for newborns and infants (in Norwegian)
• parents' health and parenthood (in Norwegian)
• use of mobile phones and screens, including the use of social media
• the child immunisation programme

Examinations

The child's head circumference, weight and length will be measured. The child's general development will be examined. This includes observation of the child's body, hearing, eyesight, eye contact, language and movement. The child is observed and examined without clothing.

Vaccines

• First dose of vaccine against diphtheria, tetanus, whooping cough, poliomyelitis, Hib infection and hepatitis B. The vaccine will be administered by injection.
• First dose of the pneumococcal vaccine (in Norwegian). The vaccine will be administered by injection.
• Second dose of vaccine against rotavirus (in Norwegian). The vaccine is oral and tastes sweet.

Preparations

The health centre is there for you and your child. If you have any questions or anything you want to raise, you can bring this up in the consultation. You may want to make notes in advance.

You have the right to an interpreter should you need one.

Both parents are encouraged to participate.
