Summary Care Record

The Summary Care Record is a national digital solution that collects and shares selected health data for patients across the health service. Access to such data is important in connection with healthcare, especially if you become acutely ill.

About the Summary Care Record

All residents of Norway, including children, have a summary care record, except for those who have opted out.

Healthcare professionals can view data in your summary care record regardless of whether they work at a hospital, GP surgery, out-of-hours medical service or in municipal health and social care. For example, if you are admitted to a hospital that you have never attended before, healthcare professionals will be able to look up your summary care record and access key information about your health. This can help ensure that you receive the right treatment more quickly.

The summary care record provides healthcare professionals with access to the following patient information when providing healthcare:

  • Critical data
  • Vaccinations
  • Organ donor card
  • Prescriptions and medications
  • Test results
  • Documents
  • Appointment history
  • Treatment plans
  • Own entries

Please note that not all out-of-hours medical services and municipalities have started using the summary care record yet.

Privacy

The Norwegian Directorate of Health is the data controller for the Summary Care Record. This means that they are responsible for processing your data in a manner that safeguards your privacy. You have a right to access data in your summary care record, to insight into the use of the data, and the right to restrict access to data. This can be found under Shared health information on Helsenorge. You should check that the data in your summary care record is correct, as this data is used to make sure you receive the right treatment.

Please note that the data in your summary care record is available only to authorised healthcare professionals in connection with patient treatment. Opting out of having a summary care record or other restrictions to healthcare professionals’ access to your data may affect the healthcare you receive, especially in an emergency situation.
